Cotto vs. Kamegai winner: Miguel Cotto takes unanimous decision after exciting bout

Miguel Cotto and Yoshihiro Kamegai combined for an incredible fight on HBO, on the same evening as the Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather bout. The contest went the full 12 rounds, and ended with a unanimous decision win for the legendary Cotto, 120-108, 118-110, 119-109.

Cotto came right out working body punches, and big ones. He was much more active and landed the harder shots in the early rounds, nearly landing double the punches of Kamegai in the opening two rounds.

By the fourth round, Cotto was well in control, but Kamegai was giving it everything he could. Kamegai stood in the pocket and traded with Cotto, despite eating the harder shots. Every time Cotto come forward and landed those vicious body shots, Kamegai shook it off and kept coming forward.

Halfway through the fight, Kamegai had a cut opened up over his right eye. He had it treated, and came out swinging in the eighth round. Cotto was breathing big, big breaths late in the fight. He was winning, indisputably, but he was getting awfully tired throwing all those body shots.

But they kept going. Kamegai ate some huge, huge shots and he kept coming forward. He was out-landed by Cotto in every single round, but showed serious heart in coming forward and the two really put on a show.

This fight took place on the same evening that the big-money fight between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor was scheduled, though the main events didn’t line up as Cotto vs. Kamegai started earlier. Going into the bout, Cotto was heavily favored to beat Kamegai.

On the undercard, the biggest bout was the WBC Junior Featherweight title contest between Rey Vargas and Ronny Rios. It was an exciting bout, but one that was largely controlled by Vargas. He kept up a high tempo and did some serious damage early with a massive flurry of uppercuts in the third round.

Vargas ultimately took a unanimous decision win, earning scores of 118-110, 118-110 and 115-113 after 12 rounds of boxing.
