Onside Kick Family Hour: All the kale in the world can’t save you from being 40

The first week of the NFL season is in the books! Retired NFL defensive end Stephen White and Ryan Van Bibber discuss what’s real and what’s not and how damn hard it is getting old.

A stifling defense fired up and ready to terrorize a bad quarterback. That’s exactly what we predicted would happen when the Texans hosted the Jaguars last week. And we were right, except that it was the Jaguars defense doing that to Tom Savage and the Texans.

Whoops.

It’s hard to tell what’s real and what isn’t for the first week of the season. Some teams are ready to go; some are rusty. This week on the podcast, Stephen White and myself had a real discussion about what was real and what wasn’t from the first week of the season and how that will end up shaping the games for Week 2.

The topics covered include:

  • Why are these O-lines sooo turrrible? And will it last? (Yes, it probably will be a huge problem for the Seahawks.)
  • Hey, that Chiefs offense is something else and with Kareem Hunt and Tyreek Hill, it’s the perfect system to make a run at the AFC.
  • The Chiefs might have a problem against the Eagles this week though. Carson Wentz can get away from the pass rush and make things happen.
  • Patriots fans should be worried. Tom Brady is 40, and all the kale in the world ain’t gonna stop Father Time. Plus, no Julian Edelman really hurts, and the Pats don’t have a very talented front seven on defense.
  • Sam Bradford looked great, but he’ll get a real test this week against the Steelers. In fact, it should be a very telling game for BOTH teams.
  • The Colts ... ugh, this is just a bad team from top to bottom.
  • Let’s talk about the Jags defense. Does it have enough talent to overcome the fact that Blake Bortles is still the starter?
  • Atlanta should beat Green Bay this week, but ....
  • The Cowboys at Broncos might just be the game of the week. For real.

You can listen to this week’s show right here, but you should subscribe to it anyway!
