West Virginia basketball surprised a walk-on with a scholarship

One of college basketball’s most heartwarming traditions.

How you know we’re getting closer to college basketball season: We’re at the part of the calendar where walk-ons are being awarded scholarships. This happened at North Carolina with resident hat kingpin Shea Rush earlier in the week.

Now it has happened at West Virginia with big man Logan Routt.

Heartwarming. This remains one of college basketball’s best traditions.

Routt is an interesting athlete in his own right. At 6’11, he was also a three-year starter at quarterback on the football field and pitched as a baseball player while in high school. It’s completely plausible that he is the tallest person to ever play quarterback at any level.

Routt didn’t appear in any games for West Virginia last season at a freshman. Maybe that changes now that he has a full ride.

West Virginia is coming (eventually) in our college basketball top-25 countdown series. Follow along here.
