James Harden donated $1 million to Hurricane Harvey relief efforts
Add The Beard to the growing list of athletes donating to the victims of Hurricane Harvey.
The Rockets’ superstar guard announced a $1 million donation to the city of Houston on Saturday in an effort to give back to the city he calls home.
“This is home for me,” said Harden, via KPRC’s Adam Wexler. “I wanted to say thank you to J.J. Watt; what he’s doing for the city, that’s not going unnoticed. Thank you to the mayor for helping me. I just want to donate and give back to the community as much as I can. So I’m gonna donate $1 million to the city, to areas that need it and to people that need it, to make the city stronger and put smiles on people’s faces.”
Harden also visited a shelter with Houston’s mayor, Sylvester Turner, to check-in with volunteers and speak with those whose homes were wrecked by the flood.
Harden isn’t the first to make a donation
Harden became one of the NBA’s richest players this summer after signing a four-year, $170 million extension on top of the remaining two years and $59 million on his current deal. He joins multiple athletes and franchises that have also made charitable donations to help in the aftermath of the disastrous flood that left many displaced, injured and even dead.
Most notably, Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt started a campaign that has raised more than $16 million for Hurricane Harvey victims. Houston Rockets owner Leslie Alexander initially pledged $4 million before increasing his donation to $10 million. The Houston Astros donated $4 million, as well, and Texans owner Bob McNair footed $1 million for hurricane relief, an amount the NFL is expected to match.
