Ty Montgomery suffers broken ribs in Packers’ game against Bears

The Packers are thin at the position.

Packers running back Ty Montgomery left their game against the Bears on Thursday night with a chest injury. As it turns out, Montgomery suffered broken ribs, and even played with the injury, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter confirmed Rapoport’s report, adding that the Packers aren’t sure how long he’ll be out.

Montgomery was taken to the locker room, and has been ruled out for the game. He was replaced with Jamaal Williams, who ended up getting injured himself with a knee injury. He’s questionable to return to the game, leaving the team with Aaron Jones.

What does this mean for the Packers? The Packers are pretty inexperienced at running back outside of Montgomery. Montgomery took over at running back after being a wide receiver last season, when injuries plagued the Packers’ backfield.

Williams was taking the bulk of the carries. He was picked in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL draft, and was the only one to take significant snaps outside of Montgomery in practice.

Behind Williams, the Packers have Aaron Jones, another rookie from the 2017 NFL draft. Jones was selected in the fifth round, and is a small but quick back that hasn’t gotten the workload that even Williams was able to see in the preseason. That’s changing on Thursday night with Williams’ injury.
