Dennis Schroder’s sneaky after-the-whistle bucket was straight from Allen Iverson’s playbook

And both times it was Dwight Howard getting owned.

I’m not convinced anyone has ever compared Dennis Schroder to Allen Iverson, even though they’re similarly sized scoring guards. It would be almost blasphemous ... except for this play that went down on Wednesday.

It’s common practice for some big men to goaltend jump shots that the other team takes after the whistle blows, one of those tiny things that makes the game fun and might have the tiniest effect on your opponent. Except when Dwight Howard did that, Schroder followed up by grabbing the ball and firing back up as a line drive that didn’t even give Howard time to jump.

It’s pedantic game-inside-the-game type stuff, and the most famous example is Allen Iverson’s in 2006. Here’s the play that circulates on Twitter every once in a while, and one again the victim is Dwight Howard.

OK, the Iverson one is clearly much more impressive. He must have put that 25 or 30 feet up in the air. Like, what?! To hit that shot nonchalantly like he did is just lethal, and it might be my favorite Allen Iverson highlight of all time.

But let’s not ignore the Dwight Howard bit any longer. This is twice now that Howard has been roasted by the exact same play, and of course it’s DWIGHT HOWARD. It’s just such a Dwight Howard thing to be owned by this niche, random, obscure moment almost a decade apart.

In fairness to Howard, he ended up with the best highlight from this game, plus the win.
