Detroit Red Wings forward Andreas Athanasiou tied the NHL record for fastest overtime goal in the team’s 2-1 win over the Ottawa Senators on Wednesday night. The extra period lasted just six seconds before Athanasiou stole the puck from Erik Karlsson and beat Craig Anderson on the breakaway to put away the game.
Red Wings forward ties NHL record for fastest overtime goal
Andreas Athanasiou needed to just six seconds to end the game.

Athanasiou, 23, is the fourth player in NHL history to score a goal just six seconds into an overtime, joining Mats Sundin, David Legwand, and Alex Ovechkin. His goal came during 3-on-3 OT, which was implemented in 2015, so it’s not the exact same as those other three goals, but it’s still quite impressive all the same.
Particularly because Athanasiou initiated the play by stealing the puck from one of the best defensemen in the league. Karlsson is now tied for second-to-last in the NHL with a minus-22 rating, which seems hard to believe considering where he and the Senators were a year ago.
Athanasiou now has 15 points in 29 games for the Red Wings this season. He’s been playing well lately with three goals and 15 shots on goal over Detroit’s current three-game winning streak.
