NCAA basketball rankings: Gonzaga stays at No. 1 in AP Poll as Michigan continues its hot start

Wolverines move up to No. 5 in the latest poll.

Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

There wasn’t any change at the top of the AP Poll this week as Gonzaga retained their No. 1 ranking. Kansas came in second once again, but their first place votes dropped significantly as the Zags picked up 43 this week to the Jayhawks’ 19 (last week was 32-31 in favor of Gonzaga).

Duke stayed No. 3, followed by fellow ACC foe Virginia at No. 4.

Michigan continued their steady climb, moving up two spots to No. 5 this week. The Wolverines scored a big 84-67 win over North Carolina in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge, and started off conference play with a 76-67 victory over Purdue. Michigan has the highest-rated defense on KenPom, and Iggy Brazdeikis has been an outstanding replacement for Moe Wagner.

Nevada dropped one spot to No. 6 to make room for Michigan, and Tennessee, Auburn, Kentucky, and Michigan State round out the top ten.

Texas, Oregon, and Purdue all fell out of the rankings this week, making room for Arizona State, Nebraska, and Furman. The Paladins are a perfect 8-0 on the season with wins over 2018 Final Four participants Loyola-Chicago and Villanova.

Wisconsin was the big jumper this week, moving from No. 22 to No. 12 after wins over NC State and then-No. 14 Iowa to open Big Ten play.

The Big Ten leads the way again this week with seven teams ranked, followed by the ACC with five teams, and the SEC with four. The Big East has just one team ranked with Villanova at No. 21, and the Pac-12 has one squad in as ASU swapped spots with Oregon.
