Update: This has been postponed until Friday (Thursday night in the United States.)

Mikaela Shiffrin has been claiming world championships since she was 17 years old. On Tuesday, the accomplished American can keep her streak alive with a gold medal performance in the Alpine slalom at the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Shiffrin’s first major gold came in 2013 as a high school junior. Since then, she’s been the queen of the slalom. She topped the podium in the event at the Sochi Games before she earned her diploma, then added two more world championships in 2015 and 2017. At just 22 years old, she’s an accomplished veteran of her sport.

That’s made her a heavy favorite Tuesday night, but she’ll still face stiff competition on the mountain at the Jeongseon Alpine Centre. Swiss standout Wendy Holdener finished second behind Shiffrin at the 2017 championships and earned gold in the combined event, showcasing her all-around talent. The 24-year-old could turn this budding rivalry into a war by upsetting the American in Pyeonchang.

Slovakian Petra Vlhova, also 22 years old, has four World Cup slalom wins to her credit. Swedish veteran Frida Hansdotter, the elder stateswoman of the group at 32, has the experience and the talent to find her way to the podium as well.

The slalom event rewards technical skiing as competitors zig-zag their way down the mountain. Skiers must sneak inside each gate — a pair of flags that denote the sharp turns of the slalom course — without missing a single one, all while maintaining speed in a timed race to the bottom. Competitors get two shots at the course, then the woman with the lowest combined time claims victory.

It’s an event Shiffrin dominated in 2014 — her two-run time of 1:44:54 was more than half a second better than silver medalist Marlies Schild’s performance in Sochi. Another big performance could cement her status as one of the greatest skiers in the sport’s history.
