Snowboard cross combines the best elements of downhill racing, short track speed-skating, and motocross and rolls them into one frenzied slide down a mountain. On Thursday, Team USA’s women will try to make up for a medal-less showing by their male Winter Olympics counterparts. The finals are expected to be run around 10:52 and can be live streamed via NBC.

Nick Baumgartner and Mick Dierdorff finished fourth and fifth, respectively, to land just outside the podium in Wednesday’s men’s finals. American veteran Lindsey Jacobellis can rectify that — and earn her first Olympic gold — with a throwback performance on the women’s side.

Jacobellis, a 10-time Winter X Games gold medalist in the sport, has been fraught with disappointment on the Olympic stage. She is participating in her fourth games, and Thursday may be the 32-year-old’s last opportunity to redeem herself after a series of high-profile crashes. None are more memorable than her botched (and completely superfluous) method grab in 2006 that turned certain gold into a second-place finish.

She’ll have to rally her way past Italy’s Michela Moioli to earn the gold that has eluded her throughout a storied career. Moioli, who is making her second Olympic appearance at 22 years old, is widely considered the favorite to top the podium in Pyeongchang. While her best performance at a major event is a pair of bronze medals in the 2015 and 2017 World Championships, she’s beginning to peak — and that maturation could put the rest of the field in her rear view in 2018.

Just landing in the top three would mean Jacobellis kept a U.S. streak alive. Americans have medaled in either the men’s or women’s snowboard cross events in every Olympiad since the sport was added to the competition in 2006. A big performance from one of the event’s most recognizable faces would expand Team USA’s relevance in the sport and end what’s been an eight-year medal drought for the women’s side.
