Energetic wing Corey Brewer reached a buyout agreement with the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday, and once he clears waivers on Friday, the Oklahoma City Thunder will sign him on the buyout market, according to Yahoo! Sports’ Shams Charania.

Brewer was playing the fewest minutes of his career in Los Angeles this season, finding himself on the bench more often than not while the Lakers developed their young core. With the Thunder, he will rejoin head coach Billy Donovan, whom he played under for three seasons with the Florida Gators from 2004-07.

Brewer, 31, is a nine-year NBA veteran with five years of playoff experience in Houston, Dallas, and Denver. He is a good athlete who defends multiple positions and has been known for his penchant to run in transition and knock down the occasional three.

That’s exactly what the Thunder need

Oklahoma City didn’t realize how much it would miss Andre Roberson until his season ended in late January with a ruptured patellar tendon. Signing Brewer, and likely bringing him off the bench, would help address the hole Roberson’s injury left.

After all, with Roberson and Paul George on the wings and Russell Westbrook at the point of attack, the Thunder became one of the NBA’s stingiest defenses. Adding Brewer into the mix gives OKC a nagging perimeter defender who can check either guard spot and most forwards, as well.
