LaMarcus Aldridge suffered a sprained right ankle in the San Antonio Spurs’ matchup against the New Orleans Pelicans on Wednesday night, the team announced. The severity of the ankle sprain is unclear, but he will not return to the game.

Aldridge first hurt his ankle defending Rajon Rondo on a drive to the rim six minutes into the first quarter. He left the game but later returned.

Aldridge then re-exited the game at the 3:20 mark in the second quarter and didn’t return to action.

Depending on how bad the ankle sprain is, the injury could be awful news to a Spurs team that has already lost Kawhi Leonard to a lingering quad injury. Leonard, though, is expected to return from his injury in the coming weeks. It will be much tougher for San Antonio to work him into the rotation if Aldridge’s injury keeps him off the court for some time.

There is reason to believe this is only a minor ankle sprain. He played through the injury for a few possessions before exiting the game during a timeout.

Hopefully, Aldridge returns to the court soon. He has been far and away the best Spurs player with Leonard out, averaging 23 points and eight rebounds per game to keep San Antonio afloat in the playoff picture as the No. 4 seed in the Western Conference.
