NBC keeps using weird animated players for graphics instead of real footage. Why?

This looks really strange.

There is unprecedented access to players and coaches in the week leading up to the Super Bowl, but NBC is instead using strange player animations rather than footage of the actual players themselves.

This looks really weird, right?

NBC could have had every player into a video booth, I’m sure. That’s how it works 99 percent of the time. They could reuse footage from media days, where this typically happens. Instead ... they have these video game-like animations. They don’t look awful, but it’s still somewhat off-putting.

Maybe this is where we’re headed, and maybe in a decade all player animations will be simulated rather than real footage. But right now, it feels like a strange decision for the game’s biggest stage.
