Very few fans at Super Bowl 52 in Minneapolis cared about Justin Timberlake’s halftime performance, it seems. Timberlake was a somewhat controversial halftime pick, although his actual show was anything but. We’ve got the recap right here.
This view of Justin Timberlake’s halftime show from the game’s actual crowd is hilariously quiet
But it might just be because the halftime show isn’t for people actually at the game.
Timberlake’s infamous moment with Janet Jackson at the 2004 Super Bowl turned into #JanetJacksonAppreciationDay, because it was seen as Timberlake throwing Jackson under the bus to start his extremely successful solo career. There was also a rumored Prince hologram, something that Prince never wanted. (There was a different Prince tribute instead.)
So ... when Timberlake came out, Minnesota sat down.
According to this Twitter user, there was a complete lack of energy there.
We can see in other videos that some fans are sort of into it.
But it’s still pretty subdued outside of the crowd on the field.
Do fans ever get into the halftime show?
That’s my big question here — all Super Bowl halftime shows may look like this. These are football fans, not pop star fans. They’re mostly fans deeply emotionally invested in the game’s outcome. You can probably understand if they aren’t so worried about Timberlake, or Lady Gaga, or whoever.
The Super Bowl halftime show is for television fans. Timberlake was slightly controversial, but I don’t think we can say that Minnesota fans specifically ignored him because of that. They might have just ignored him for normal football reasons.
