The Orlando Magic have traded point guard Elfrid Payton to the Phoenix Suns in exchange for a second-round pick, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. The Suns have been on the hunt for a point guard to start alongside Devin Booker, and with Payton, they have found one at least for the moment.
NBA trade deadline 2018: Elfrid Payton traded to Suns for 2nd-round pick, per report
Phoenix lands a point guard while Orlando cuts its losses before Payton’s looming free agency.

Phoenix currently holds the third-worst record in the Western Conference, which means Orlando will receive an early second-round pick in the loaded 2018 NBA Draft.
Payton is averaging a career-best 13 points on 37 percent shooting from three. He is also averaging 6.3 assists and 1.5 steals per game. He is a solid point guard who has not improved tremendously now in his fourth year in the league.
The Suns traded Eric Bledsoe to Milwaukee midseason and virtually only had Tyler Ulis as a point guard on the roster. Payton becomes a restricted free agent this summer, and if the Suns intend to keep him, they will need to make an offer or match competing offers in free agency.
