Derrick Rose has signed a contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves through the rest of the season, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. He rejoins Jimmy Butler, Taj Gibson and head coach Tom Thibodeau from his playing days with the Chicago Bulls.

Rose signed with the Cleveland Cavaliers to begin the season, but quickly suffered a bone spur in his ankle that put him in a walking boot. Shortly after, reports began to surface that the former league Most Valuable Player was evaluating his future playing basketball.

Rose appeared in 16 games, starting seven of them, with averages of 9.8 points and 1.6 assists and 1.8 turnovers on 44 percent shooting from the field and 25 percent shooting from three. But as the issues began compounding in a Cavaliers season that took a turn for the worst, Cleveland’s midseason roster overhaul included its injury-stricken guard.

The Cavaliers traded Rose in a package to the Utah Jazz as part of the pre-trade deadline series of deals that brought Rodney Hood, Jordan Clarkson, Larry Nance Jr. and George Hill to Cleveland. The Jazz subsequently waived Rose, and he has been a free agent ever since.

In signing with the Timberwolves, Rose rejoins Thibodeau, who coached him to become the youngest player in NBA history to win the Most Valuable Player of the Year award in 2011. Thibodeau and Rose also led the Bulls to their deepest postseason run since the Michael Jordan and Phil Jackson era.

Rose is expected to backup Jeff Teague and play in spot minutes off the bench.
