This summer’s all-athletes ‘Dancing with the Stars’ features Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Tonya Harding

An athlete was probably gonna win it anyway, so DWTS leaned into the trend.

Summer is nearly here, which means its time for America’s major television networks to fire off the failed sitcoms for which they have no hope, and the low-effort, brain-numbing content that requires no effort — like rounding up “celebrities” and putting them in awkward situations.

In 2018, the latter will feature more professional athletes than you’re used to. Dancing with the Stars, the pilonidal cyst that haunts ABC’s lineup, is returning for its 26th season, and there’s a twist (besides the fact that celebrities are ... dancing). This round’s cast will exclusively feature athletes.

This season’s competition features an intriguing mix of young stars from overlooked sports, fading names of yesterday looking for any opportunity to boost their foundering Q scores, and Josh Norman. Here’s this summer’s 10-person cast:

DTWS is leaning into the trend, as athletes have unsurprisingly cleaned up the competition in years past. Ten of the previous 25 disco ball trophies have been taken home by professionals from the worlds of pro football (Emmitt Smith, Hines Ward), figure skating (Kristi Yamaguchi, Meryl Davis), gymnastics (Shawn Johnson, Laurie Hernandez), and more. Given that history, the smart money would be on either Norman or the ice skating trio of Adam Rippon, Mirai Nagasu, and, uh, Tonya Harding (not her, though).

Season 26 of Dancing with the Stars premieres some day where you should really just go outside instead. It will be hosted by not-Bob Saget from America’s Funniest Home Videos and — oh, my God, who caressssssss?
