Ben Simmons went to the foul line with 3:33 remaining in the third quarter of Celtics vs. 76ers Game 1, and Celtics fans activated petty level 5,000 and showered him with chants of “not a rookie.”

Donovan Mitchell, whose Rookie of the Year campaign gave birth to those chant tweeted a few laughing emojis shortly after.
Simmons has been considered the favorite for the NBA Rookie of the Year award this season, but Mitchell is a close second, and in an effort to swing some votes this season, the Jazz guard started an entire campaign that challenged Simmons’s legitimacy as an actual rookie. That campaign included a hoodie with the definition of a rookie printed on the front, and a billboard with the word “Rookie?” in Salt Lake City.
Simmons missed his first season in the NBA with a foot injury and his rookie year was delayed to this season. This mini war won’t be settled until someone claims the trophy.
