The Seattle Mariners have hung around in contention in the American League West but will now be without their second baseman for a while. Robinson Cano was hit by a pitch on Sunday and suffered a broken bone in his right hand.

Cano was hit by a pitch from Detroit Tigers left-hander Blaine Hardy in the third inning on Sunday and immediately left the game. He suffered a fractured fifth metacarpal on his right hand, the Mariners announced.

Seattle entered Sunday 22-16, just 1½ games back in the American League West. Cano, who hit a three-run home run in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader, is hitting .287/.385/.441 this season.

Cano has been an iron man throughout his career, playing in at least 150 games in each of his last 11 seasons, averaging 159 games during that span. Since Cano debuted in 2005 his 2,035 games played are the most in the majors. The player with the second-most games during that span is Ichiro Suzuki, who is now a special assistant with the Mariners and served as bench coach earlier this weekend when manager Scott Servais was away.

Cano has only been on the disabled list twice in his 14-year career, missing 35 games with a strained left hamstring in 2006 and missing 11 games with a right quad strain in 2017.
