Carlos Vela, forward for the Mexican national team in the World Cup, announced on Instagram that his grandfather has passed away. In a touching message, Vela posted that his grandfather got to see him in action when Mexico upset Germany in the World Cup before his death.

“The last victory that you were able to see ... I hope you left proud of me,” the message reads in English, via Tom Marshall of ESPN. You can see the untranslated Instagram post below.

Vela is an integral part of the Mexican National Team as well as MLS club Los Angeles FC. The 29-year-old was praised heavily by El Tri’s head coach, Juan Carlos Osorio, following the game.

He played 58 minutes in that game, and he continually moved the ball and set up scoring opportunities for essentially the entire time he was on the field. Mexico hadn’t beaten Germany since 1985 before that one. It’s probably safe to say his grandfather was indeed proud of him.
