While the NFL champion Philadelphia Eagles were busy not celebrating their title at the White House, the WNBA champion Minnesota Lynx announced they’d commemorate their victory with community service.
Minnesota Lynx celebrated their WNBA title by giving needy students shoes in D.C.
The Lynx celebrated with service.

On Tuesday, the Lynx announced they’d paired with Samaritan’s Feet Shoes of Hope to distribute shoes to children from low-income families as part of their championship celebration. One day later, members of the team descended on Washington D.C.’s Payne Elementary, a school where 30 percent of students are homeless, to distribute shoes and socks from Nike, Jordan Brand, and DTLR.
The players on that 2017 title team were excited to give back to the community — even if it wasn’t their local one in the Twin Cities.
It’s a positive response from a team who was shunned by the White House when it came time to celebrate their world title. According to head coach Cheryl Reeve, Minnesota never received an invitation from President Donald Trump or his staff to be feted in the nation’s capital. That was a stark difference from the team’s post-championship plans in 2011, 2013, and 2015, where they were the subject of official ceremonies on the South Lawn.
Instead, the Lynx — who are in town for a road game against the Washington Mystics — took that spurning and used it for good, providing new shoes for needy elementary school students. And if those students can get downtown Thursday afternoon, they’ll be able to see Minnesota in action at no cost; tickets for tomorrow’s Lynx-Mystics game are free thanks to the Stanley Cup viewing party that will follow at Capital One Arena.
