Dodgers infielder Kiké Hernandez proudly gave himself an ‘L’ after his pitching debut

Hernandez gave up a game-winning homer, but he’s not too worried about it.

Dodgers utility infielder Kiké Hernandez took the mound at last night’s game against the Phillies with the hopes and dreams of rescuing his team’s beleaguer bullpen in the bottom of the 16th inning. He left it with an 0-1 record, a career ERA of 81.00, and a fun story to tell on social media.

The versatile fielder became the latest position player to take the mound in the MLB, but unlike most of the recent non-pitcher appearances on the mound, his came in what would be the final inning of a marathon tie game. It went....poorly.

Hernandez’s night can be summed up with two tweets. His pitching career started delightfully in warmups:

And then shot gloriously into the sky before exploding into a million pieces, giving the Philadelphia social media team a layup pun for which they should not be rewarded:

His evening, according to the play-by-play recap:

Hernandez could have shaken off the defeat and laid low knowing a) he’s a position player, so no one expected anything from him aside from mid-70s fastballs and a possible eephus pitch and b) the game ended after much of the East Coast was already tucked in for bed. Instead, he took the loss in stride and turned it into #content.

Hernandez also went 0-7 at the plate — with zero strikeouts, though!

All in all, a rough night for the well-traveled youngster. We shouldn’t be surprised by 26-year-old’s ability to laugh at himself, though. His recent engagement photos were proof of that.
