Mascots observing moments of silence, an odd British soccer phenomenon

That probably shouldn’t look that silly.

Steve Bardens

As in all sports, British soccer teams take a minute’s silence to honor the deaths and disasters of the world. All the players join arms and stand solemnly for a quiet moment. It’s not just the players, though. This thread at When Saturday Comes points out the phenomenon of mascots joining in the minute’s silence. It makes sense, because mascots are people and people feel feelings even when in costume. But as pictured above, the practice can make for some inappropriately comical images. It’s hard to convey the proper somberness when you’re wearing the giant, furry, grinning head of Baggie Bird.
