Some folks are furious Kobe Bryant won’t star in Space Jam 2

This is apparently an indefensible snub.

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

It came out Friday evening that Hollywood people are trying to develop a sequel to Space Jam starring LeBron James. James’ people have since thrown a little cold water on the report, but it’s already been out there long enough to make people feel lots of ways. Some people are thrilled because they grew up loving Space Jam and look forward to a sequel. Some are worried the sequel won’t live up to their fondness for the original. Those who hated the original dread the sequel. Still others rue the fact that the sequel didn’t get made sooner, when a star like Kobe Bryant or Allen Iverson was in his prime.

And then there’s this:

Even our friends at Lakers Nation got in on it:

There are hundreds of tweets like this. Some of them must be joshing, but a lot of these sound really serious. Guys. Space Jam 2, which may or may not actually exist, is not a referendum on who the best player in the league is. It is a children’s movie. Nor is it the indicator of who the second coming of Michael Jordan is, nor is that last thing even a thing. It is a children’s movie. The first starred Jordan when he was a bit past his prime, but still the league’s most prominent star and the best player on a team in the middle of a dynasty run. Right now, that is unmistakably LeBron James.

If they made Space Jam 2 12 years ago, they probably would have picked Kobe Bryant to star. Around 2003, they probably would not have, because this is about marketability. A few years later, maybe Kobe would have been the choice again. In 2014, if movie producers want to make a basketball/cartoon film for children, the first NBA player they will choose is LeBron James. This is patently obvious. It’s not hating on anyone’s legacy. Nobody’s legacy is at stake on the back of a children’s movie, least of all someone as accomplished as Kobe Bryant. (Or Michael Jordan. Or LeBron James) This is just marketing and basic common sense.

Anyway, this is the final answer here:
