The Grizzlies are giving away neck tattoo stickers

In James Johnson’s honor, because he has a tattoo on his neck.

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

ESPN’s Darren Rovell has the SCOOP on an unusual promotion coming up for the Memphis Grizzlies. See, Grizz fan favorite James Johnson has a tattoo on his neck honoring his son’s survival through premature birth. Therefore, the Grizzlies are going to give out branded, transparent stickers you’re supposed to stick on your neck:

The first 5,000 fans into the team’s Feb. 21 home game against the Los Angeles Clippers will receive a clear sticker with the word “GRIZZLIES” to go on their neck in celebration of one of Memphis’ newest surprises, forward James Johnson.

So, that’s different. It’s not even a temporary tattoo (which, to be fair, would require water and a bit more effort); it’s a sticker. That you put on your neck. I’m really curious to see whether fans actually do what they’re supposed to with the stickers. Like, it’s clearly a nice and genuine gesture, but it’s such a bizarre thing to ask of your fans. But hey, if tattoo stickers take off, the Knicks can print out “SWISH”/Young Money stickers for J.R. Smith fans (or just J.R. Smith back stickers for Chris Smith, if ever he returns). The Hawks Whichever team next signs Deshawn Stevenson could give out DeShawn Stevenson Abe Lincoln stickers. The Heat could go with the Chris Andersen/“FREEBIRD” sticker. If anyone ever brings Renaldo Balkman back, they could give out “KOOL” stickers with special adhesive that allows them to stick inside of lips.

Stickers. Stickers on people.
