Twitter directed its own-goal outrage at the wrong Marcelo

A classic case of mistaken identity by Hate Twitter.

Marcelo Vieira da Silva Júnior-- just Marcelo to you and I-- got Brazil’s World Cup off to a yucky start by toeing in an own goal early in the opening match against Croatia. Angry Twitter immediately got to work harassing him, but a great number of them missed the mark.

The Twitter handle @marcelo was mostly spared-- perhaps because he has an Argentine flag as his avatar and made his identity clear promptly. @Marcello, meanwhile-- with that second “l”-- has a ton of followers (he appears to be a famous muscleman of some sort) and didn’t think to preempt the attacks, so he got hit hard:

And these people didn’t consider “hey, maybe this guy with short hair who’s tweeting in the middle of the match isn’t the intended target of my hatred”:
