Marcelo Vieira da Silva Júnior-- just Marcelo to you and I-- got Brazil’s World Cup off to a yucky start by toeing in an own goal early in the opening match against Croatia. Angry Twitter immediately got to work harassing him, but a great number of them missed the mark.
Twitter directed its own-goal outrage at the wrong Marcelo
A classic case of mistaken identity by Hate Twitter.

The Twitter handle @marcelo was mostly spared-- perhaps because he has an Argentine flag as his avatar and made his identity clear promptly. @Marcello, meanwhile-- with that second “l”-- has a ton of followers (he appears to be a famous muscleman of some sort) and didn’t think to preempt the attacks, so he got hit hard:
@Marcello HAHA YOU SCORED AN OWNGOAL AHAHA
— £squiZarrio Paj Paj (@pabs_eskivel) June 12, 2014 @Marcello u shit prick, how did u score an own goal
— Harman (@HarmanSahota_) June 12, 2014 @Marcello Sweet own goal cock breath
— Lester Cullen (@LesterCullen) June 12, 2014 @Marcello Nice own goal you shit cunt
— Forza Uruguay (@AdamHollandLFC) June 12, 2014 And these people didn’t consider “hey, maybe this guy with short hair who’s tweeting in the middle of the match isn’t the intended target of my hatred”:
@Marcello you wouldn't have scored that own goal if you hadn't cut your hair #selfishbastard
— Tom Hamer (@tomhamish489) June 12, 2014 NO WONDER YOU SCORING OWN GOAL IF YOU TWEETING DURING GAME YOU FUKING IDIOT @Marcello !!!
— Beijing Red 4 Lyf (@Beijingcasuals) June 12, 2014 Please make sure your vileness is directed to the right place from now on:
