15-year-old American CiCi Bellis won her U.S. Open debut

She’s the youngest in almost two decades to win.

Hey remember how when you were 15 years old you were completely incompetent and offered nothing of value to the world because that’s just what it is to be 15? Keeping that in mind, know this: Catherine “CiCi” Bellis -- San Francisco native, 1,211th-ranked women’s tennis player, and 15-year-old human -- won her debut match at the U.S. Open on Tuesday afternoon.

Bellis didn’t just win -- she took down 12-seeded Dominika Cibulkova in three sets. Cibulkova was just a finalist in the Australian Open. And either way, a 15-year-old winning an Open match against anyone at all isn’t something that just happens all the time:

The USA has several promising young women competing in this Open, but folks probably weren’t ready to count Bellis among them just yet. Maybe time to do that.
