— Washington Post (@washingtonpost) August 3, 2014 To nobody’s surprise, none of these people are me or you, and a number of these people own or have owned sports-related franchises. For instance:
Oregon’s Phil Knight co-founded Nike, which you may have noticed in some sports.
Florida’s Micky Arison owns the Miami Heat.
Louisiana’s Tom Benson owns the New Orleans Saints and New Orleans Pelicans.
Maryland/Washington D.C.‘s Ted Lerner is the managing principal owner of the Washington Nationals.
California’s Larry Ellison races yachts and has been trying to buy an NBA team forever (and the Golden State Warriors’ arena bears the name of his company, Oracle).
South Dakota’s T. Denny Sanford has donated a bunch of money to the Minnesota Gophers.
Wisconsin’s John Menard is a former IndyCar team owner and is a partner in Robby Gordon Motorsports (and the father of a NASCAR driver).
South Carolina’s Anita Zucker co-owns the South Carolina Stingrays.
New Mexico’s Maloof Brothers, who get to count as one person for some reason, are related to Adrienne Maloof, who started the ZING vodka company.
The lesson: If you want to become extremely rich, buy a sports team! That’s the lesson, right?
