Chivas Guadalajara’s season struggles continued on Wednesday night with a meager 1-1 draw against lowly W Connection. The Goats are now three points behind Xelaju, heading into an October 25 clash in Mexico between the two on the final match day.

The first half was all Chivas as they controlled possession and did well to create chances. But their finishing wasn’t great and when they did get a shot on frame, Jan-Michael Williams was there to deny them.

Just when it looked like Chivas would go into halftime still level, Erick ‘Cubo’ Torres broke through. The youngster took a cross from Omar Esparza and settled before turning and hitting a good shot to find the net.

W Connection did well at the beginning of the second half and put Chivas on their heels. It paid off in the 66th minute when Clyde Leon’s free kick beat the wall and while Luis Michel got a hand to it, he couldn’t keep the ball out. Unexpectedly, W Connection were level.

The end of the match saw Chivas pour the pressure on, but they couldn’t beat Williams. He held off the Goats and earned the home side a point, even if they have already been eliminated so it doesn’t matter much. What it really did was set Chivas back and put them into a must-win group stage finale.

If Chivas do not beat Xelaju next month they will become the first Mexican team be eliminated before the quarterfinals since the Champions League started in 2008,
