Derek Kellogg gets 3-year extension from UMass

UMass has opted to extend head coach Derek Kellogg after a season that saw his team make the postseason for the first time in four years, with Kelogg’s Minutemen making the semifinals of the NIT.

Anthony Gruppuso-US PRESSWIRE

UMass has reached an extension to keep head coach Derek Kellogg in charge of the Minutemen through 2017.

Kellogg’s first four years at the school where he played under John Calipari haven’t been unbelievable, but there’s a trend of progress. The team finished below 10th place in the Atlantic 10 each of his first two seasons, got to .500 overall in his third, and finished fifth and went 25-12 overall, appearing in the postseason for the first time in his career.

As a player, Kellogg captained a team that went to the 1995 Elite Eight. This past season, he coached a No. 5 seed in the NIT to the semifinals at Madison Square Garden, only the fourth time a team had ever advanced that far by having to win three games on the road.

The new contract adds three additional years to his initial deal, which ran through the end of the 2013-2014 season.

According to Matt Vautour of the Daily Hampshire Gazette, Kellogg’s deal will give him $250,000 in base salary and guarantees him $665,000 over the course of the contract. If the team hits certain achievements both on the court and, in a less common move, in the classroom, Kellogg’s compensation could reach $800,000.
