College of Charleston expected to join CAA

The Charleston Cougars board of trustees will vote Saturday on whether to join the Colonial Athletic Association. What are the chances they will join?

Marvin Gentry-US PRESSWIRE

The College of Charleston Cougars are expected to join the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) for the 2013-14 season, according to ESPN's Andy Katz.

The board of trustees at Charleston has scheduled a 9:30 a.m. vote on Saturday regarding the invitation with an announcement to follow.

The Cougars would have to pay an exit fee of $600,000 to leave the Southern Conference after this season. The school would pay $300,000 if they decided to wait a couple of years to leave the conference. Sources within the CAA expect the school to accept their invitation. George Mason Patriots athletic director Tom O'Connor believes the Cougars would fit well in the CAA:

“I hope it happens,” George Mason athletic director Tom O’Connor said. “They would be a great addition to the league. I hope they make the decision to come. They would be excellent.”

This news comes a day after the Davidson Wildcats rejected an invitation from the conference. The CAA already lost the Va. Commonwealth Rams to the Atlantic 10 this season, and the Old Dominion Monarchs and the Georgia St. Panthers will be leaving the conference after this season to join Conference USA and the Sun Belt Conference, respectively.
