Michigan star Trey Burke suspended for exhibition game

Michigan star Trey Burke will sit out the team’s exhibition opener against Northern Michigan on Thursday after being suspended due to a “violation of team standards.”

The Michigan Wolverines basketball team has suspended starting point guard Trey Burke for the team's exhibition opener against the Northern Michigan Wildcats on Thursday night, according to Nick Baumgardner of MLive. The sophomore has been suspended for a "violation of team standards."

Named to the preseason AP All-American first team this week, Burke is considered one of the best players in the nation, but Wolverines coach John Beilein announced his suspension on Wednesday. It’s not a great start to the season for Burke, who leads a Michigan team that’s currently ranked fifth in the nation entering the regular season.

In his first year with Michigan in 2011, Burke set the Michigan school record for assists by a freshman on his way to being named Co-Big Ten Freshman of the Year. He considered leaving Ann Arbor to take his talents to the NBA, but ultimately opted to return for another go with the Wolverines.

Beilein says that freshman Spike Albrecht will start in Burke's place Thursday night against Northern Michigan. Burke should be back after that, though, as the suspension is only expected to last one game.
