College basketball scores: Syracuse rolls in Carrier Classic

No. 2 Louisville 79, Manhattan 51

The second-ranked Cards scored 51 second points to overwhelm visiting Manhattan and former Rick Pitino assistant Steve Masiello. Feast or famine junior guard Russ Smith led the way with 23 points and five steals, while preseason Big East Player of the Year Peyton Siva added 10 points and 10 assists for his second career double-double. It’s a win that could end up looking better than it was for Louisville, as Manhattan - the preseason pick in the MAAC - was playing without star George Beamon.

No. 4 Ohio State 82, Albany 60

The Buckeyes ended the first half on a 17-2 run and coasted from there to a 22-point win over Albany in their season-opener. Preseason All-American DeShaun Thomas score 13 of his 19 points during that key stretch before the break. OSU looked a bit sluggish to start the game, which could have been partly due to having just one day of rest after traveling home from the canceled Carrier Classic in Charleston on Friday. Aaron Craft got his junior season started in style with a 20-point, seven-assist performance.

No. 9 Syracuse 62, No. 20 San Diego State 49

The only aircraft carrier game that was played in its entirety this weekend was also the lone matchup of two top 25 teams. You wouldn’t have known it if you watched the game, as Syracuse held SDSU to 27 percent shooting and was never really threatened by the Aztecs. Steve Fisher’s team made an ugly performance that much worse by connecting on just 14 of their 33 free-throw attempts. Chalk it up to being a product of the unique surroundings and move on.

No. 10 Florida 84, Alabama State 35

Florida led this game 52-9 at one point. That’s really the only summary you need, but just because my everything bagel was especially delicious this morning I’ll add that Kenny Boynton scored 22 points and dished out five assists in his first “real” start at point guard. The Gators figure to get a tad bit more of a test against Wisconsin on Wednesday.

No. 11 North Carolina 80, Florida Atlantic 56

James Michael McAdoo is certainly doing everything he can to confirm the plethora of preseason “breakout star” predictions that were hurled in his direction this summer. The sophomore backed up his 26-point, 14-rebound effort in Carolina’s season-opener with a 19-point, 11-rebound performance on Sunday. The Heels will head West for a game with Long Beach State before a key stretch that includes the Maui Invitational and a trip to Bloomington to face No. 1 Indiana.

No. 12 Arizona 82, Charleston Southern 73

Despite their sparkling preseason ranking being thanks in large part to their elite group of freshmen, it was Arizona’s veterans who made sure the Wildcats weren’t embarrassed on opening night. Xavier transfer Mark Lyons was the star of stars, scoring 17 points, dishing out six assists and committing zero turnovers. Lyons and Arizona veterans Solomon Hill and Kevin Parrom led the charge during a late run that finally put the pesky Buccaneers away.

No. 19 Baylor 78, Jackson State 47

The Bears were able to overwhelm Jackson State despite being without the services of freshman center Isaiah Austin, who sat out the game after spraining his ankle against Lehigh in the season-opener. The rout’s unsurprising catalyst was Pierre Jackson, who finished with 25 points and seven dimes. Junior forward Cory Jefferson had his second extremely impressive game in a row, finishing with 14 points, seven rebounds and six blocks. Jefferson didn’t spend much time on the floor last season when current pros Perry Jones, Quincy Acy and Quincy Miller were all calling Waco home.

No. 23 Wisconsin 87, Southeast Louisiana 47

You have no idea how badly I wanted to abbreviate “Southeast” just then. The Badgers got a lift in their season-opner by the unexpected return of senior forward Mike Bruesewitz, who had only been practicing since Friday after suffering a serious laceration on his lower right leg during practice on Oct. 9. Bruesewitz drilled all three of his field goal attempts and scored 10 points in 13 minutes. Jared Berggren led Wiscy with 19 points, while Ben Brust added 14 points and 11 rebounds. The Badgers scored the first 19 points of the game.

No. 24 Cincinnati 80, Tennessee-Martin 57

The final score here looks about 1,000 times better than it was, as UC led 47-14 at the break and by as many as 36 in the second half. The talented Bearcat backcourt led the way for Mick Cronin’s team, with Cashmere Wright scoring a team- high 16 points and Sean Kilpatrick adding 14. Cincinnati doesn’t figure to face much of a test until they head to the Global Sports Classic (which also includes Iowa State and UNLV) later this month.

OTHER SCORES OF NOTE:

Villanova 80, Marshall 68

Freshman Ryan Arcidiacono exploded for 25 points as Jay Wright’s team made a nice early statement. It was a disappointing result for Marshall, whose fans have high hopes for this being the first Thundering Herd team to make the NCAA Tournament since 1987.

South Carolina 82, Milwaukee 75 (OT)

The Frank Martin era in Columbia started with an overtime win in a game where the Gamecocks once trailed 40-13. Junior guard Brenton Williams played hero, scoring 12 of his 14 points during the extra period.

Georgetown 61, Duquesne 55

Freshman D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera was impressive in his college debut, scoring 19 points to lead the Hoyas to an ugly victory. The bigger news, however, was preseason honorable mention All-American Otto Porter leaving the game in the first half and not returning after being elbowed in the head.

Purdue 83, Hofstra 54

A solid bounceback performance from the Boilers, who lost to Bucknell to open the season on Friday.

Marquette 84, Colgate 63

The Golden Eagles got to take the floor for the first time following the disappointing cancellation of the Carrier Classic.Jamil Wilson had 15 points and Davante Gardner added 14 in a game Marquette never trailed.
