Shabazz Muhammad cleared to play for UCLA

After months of an NCAA investigation, UCLA freshman Shabazz Muhammad has been cleared to play this season.

Shabazz Muhammad has been cleared by the NCAA to play for the UCLA Bruins this year. The official statement can be found here. The NCAA spent the last few months investigating Muhammad for accepting impermissible benefits on recruiting trips. After initially ruling him ineligible last week, UCLA appealed the ruling.

After stating their case on Friday, it has been decided that Muhammad can play immediately. He will have to pay back $1,600 to the NCAA. Since he sat out UCLA’s first three games of the season, he does not have to miss any more. The Bruins’ next game is a showdown with Georgetown on Monday.

The Bruins entered this season with high expectations. Some national pundits pegged Muhammad as the National Freshman of the Year in the preseason, and some even believed he would be an All-American. Now that he is eligible to play, UCLA becomes one of the more formidable teams in the country.
