The future of the Duke Blue Devils football program just got a lot more stable, with head coach David Cutcliffe signing an extension through the 2018 season, according to Laura Keeley, after preemptively shooting down Tennessee rumors.
Duke extends David Cutcliffe amid coaching candidacy rumors
David Cutcliffe will be a mainstay at Duke.
Cutcliffe has taken a program that has been nothing more than a doormat for years and turned it into a respectable, viable entity. Duke will make a bowl appearance this season, its first since 1994.
The 58-year-old coach is in his fifth year with the Blue Devils. His time with the school certainly didn’t start out with much success. In fact, his best record in the first four years was 5-7.
However, his 6-5 mark this year has convinced Duke that Cutcliffe is the right man with which to head into the long-term future.
Before coaching the Blue Devils, Cutcliffe was the head coach at Ole Miss, where he led the Rebels to five bowls games, winning four of them, including the Cotton Bowl in 2003.
