West Virginia has signed men’s basketball coach Bob Huggins to a contract extension, according to Mike DeCourcy of Sporting News. DeCourcy reports that the new deal will extend Huggins’s tenure in Morgantown to 11 years (he just started his sixth season), and also push him above the prestigious $3 million per year club among college hoops coaches.

Bob Huggins has signed a contract extension to remain as men’s basketball coach at West Virginia, the Sporting News reports.

Huggins, who played at West Virginia in the ‘70s, returned to Morgantown to coach the Mountaineers in 2007. He took over a program scrambling to replace John Beilein, who steered the Mountaineers to success in the Big East. Huggins has continued, and exceeded, those results both on the court and the recruiting trail. Along with Da’Sean Butler, Huggins guided WVU to the Final Four in 2010, making just the second-ever appearance there for the Mountaineers and the first in more than 50 years.
The Final Four trip was a highlight in what is now a five-year stretch of NCAA Tournament appearances under Huggins. The Mountaineers got off to a rough start this season in their opener at Gonzaga, but the sustained success and competitiveness with Huggins easily convinced athletic director Oliver Luck and WVU to extend his contract.
