Indiana loses appeal for suspended freshmen

Peter Jurkin and Hanner Perea will have to finish the final four games of their suspensions, an appeals court ruled.

The NCAA Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement came to an appeal decision on Friday to uphold a suspension given earlier in the season to Indiana basketball players Peter Jurkin and Hanner Perea. The pair of freshman each missed the first five games of the season for the Hoosiers and will miss four more before returning to the court.

According to the NCAA, Jurkin and Perea accepted approximately $6,000 to $8,000 in improper benefits from an Indiana University booster:

The recruiting inducements were provided on multiple occasions during the student-athletes’ recruitment, and included plane tickets, meals, housing, a laptop, cell phone and clothing.

The No. 1 Hoosiers won each of its first five games, including an overtime win on Tuesday against Georgetown, 82-72. After four more missed games, including a game on Tuesday against No. 9 North Carolina, Jurkin and Perea will be slated to make their debuts on Saturday, Dec. 15 against Butler. Indiana doesn’t begin Big Ten play until Monday, Dec. 31 against Iowa.

Jurkin is a 7’0, 230-pound center from Juba, South Sudan, while Perea is a 6’8, 225-pound. forward from Istmina, Colombia.
