Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim issues plea for stricter laws against assault weapons

Richard Mackson-US PRESSWIRE

Less than an hour after becoming only the third Division I head coach to win 900 games, Jim Boeheim used his moment in the national spotlight to tackle a topic most sports figures wouldn’t touch with a 50-foot pole.

Boeheim concluded the press conference following his team’s 72-68 win over Detroit with a plea for stricter laws against assault weapons. The issue has become one of the country’s most hotly debated in the days following last Friday’s tragic school shooting in Newtown, Conn.

“This will probably offend some people,” Boeheim said. “But I was watching television all day today, because I don’t, you know, leave. If we in this country as Americans cannot get the people that represent us to do something about firearms, we are a sad, sad society. I’m a hunter. I’ve hunted. I’m not talking about rifles. That’s fine. If one person in this world; the NRA president, anybody, can tell me why we need assault weapons with 30 shots in the thing. This is our fault. This is my fault and your fault. All of your faults if we don’t get out and do something about this.”

You can listen to Boeheim’s remarks in their entirety in this video from The Post-Standard:
