Last week, the Catholic Seven officially decided to leave the Big East conference amidst all the conference realignment, and decided to form their own conference. Needless to say, a conference needs to have more than seven schools in it -- and rumors are already surfacing that the conference will have 12 schools.
Catholic 7 league expected to add Xavier, Butler, Creighton, Dayton
Xavier, Butler, Creighton and Dayton are expected to be added to the new “Catholic Seven League” that could begin play as early as next season.
According to Sports Illustrated’s Pete Thamel, Xavier and Butler will “definitely” be added to the new conference, which would give the new conference nine schools. After that, Creighton and Dayton would be the next two targets for the new conference, which would bump up the total to 11.
Thamel believes the 12th spot in the conference is slightly up for grabs, but that Saint Louis would be the favorite for the final spot. VCU and Davidson are both sleepers for the 12th spot -- despite the fact that VCU isn’t a private or a religious institution.
The new conference isn’t expected to begin play until 2014-15, but Thamel adds that there is an outside chance that the new league could begin play as soon as next season.
