Montana Star Will Cherry Suffers Broken Foot

Will Cherry was expected to be the best player in the Big Sky Conference for the Montana Grizzlies, but a broken foot suffered in a pickup game will delay the start of his season.

Montana Grizzlies guard Will Cherry broke his foot playing in a pickup game last weekend and is expected to be unable to play for three months.

Cherry led Montana to an NCAA Tournament berth, and was the Grizzlies’ top scorer with 15.8 points per game on 44.5 percent shooting as well as 37 percent from beyond the arc. Arguably his best asset was his defense. The 6’1 senior averaged 2.6 steals per game and was also second on the team in assists. The Grizzlies went 15-1 in the Big Sky conference and earned a 13 seed in the tourney, where they lost against Wisconsin.

Luckily for Montana, the 10-12 week timeline for recovery on his right foot isn't a season-killer: Cherry is expected to be back by the new year, and the Grizzlies hope he can be back for the conference schedule, meaning he still has a shot at winning the conference player of the year title many predict for him. Cherry is hoping to be the second Big Sky player drafted in as many seasons, after Weber State's Damian Lillard's campaign saw him rise from obscurity to No. 6 on the draft board, going to the Portland Trail Blazers.
