No. 16 San Diego State vs. Colorado State final score: Aztecs survive in overtime, 79-72

Red-hot first-half shooting from long range for San Diego State and a furious comeback from Colorado State highlighted the Aztecs’ overtime victory.

No. 16 San Diego State made nine of its 13 three-point attempts in the first half as the Aztecs held off the Colorado State Rams 79-72 Saturday night in overtime to improve to 2-0 in the Mountain West.

The Aztecs ended the first half on a 9-0 run and responded in overtime to a second-half charge from the Rams to secure the victory. Jamaal Franklin led San Diego State with 23 points, including 18 in the opening frame.

Colorado State outscored San Diego State 40-22 in the second half and pulled to within three with just over four minutes left on a triple from Wes Eikmeier. He had 22 points to lead the Rams and his three capped a 10-0 run that brought Colorado State back into it. The Rams eventually tied the game on a layup from Colton Iverson with 14 seconds left to send the game into the extra session.

After the Rams briefly took the lead on a pair of free throws from Iverson, Chase Tapley took over for the Aztecs. He had 12 points in overtime, including two three-pointers, to power the nation's 16th-ranked team. Tapley finished with 19 overall.

For the game, Colorado State out-rebounded San Diego State, 51-34, led by 14 from Pierce Hornung and 11 each from Iverson and Daniel Bejarano.
