Ben McLemore injury: Jayhawks star OK after scare vs. Baylor

The freshman left Monday’s game early with a sprained ankle.

USA TODAY Sports

Kansas Jayhawks guard Ben McLemore injured his ankle Monday night, but it's not as bad as some people feared when he initially suffered the injury, according to Jason King of ESPN.

McLemore turned his ankle toward the end of the Jayhawks’ 61-44 win on Monday against Baylor. McLemore laid on the court in pain, but during the post-game press conference Bill Self reassured the media that the team’s leading scorer would be OK:

Thirty minutes later, Self and the Jayhawks were all smiles during their postgame news conference. Yes, McLemore had injured his ankle, but it was diagnosed as only a Grade 1 sprain. Self said he’s hopeful McLemore, who averages 16.4 points, will be available for Saturday’s game at Texas.

“He’s all right,” Johnson said after talking with McLemore in the locker room. “He panicked more than anything.”

McLemore had a game-high 17 points before leaving Monday’s game.

Kansas can’t afford to lose McLemore, who has carried the team as a freshman. The 6’5 guard is averaging 16.4 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. He’s shooting .503 from the field and .435 from 3-point range.

McLemore’s best game of the season came last week against Iowa State. He scored 33 points on 10-of-12 shooting from the field, including a perfect 6-for-6 on 3-pointers. The performance led the Jayhawks to a 97-89 overtime win.
