A young St. John’s team did a lot of growing up on Tuesday night, as it upset No. 20 Notre Dame with a 67-63 win at Madison Square Garden.
Notre Dame vs. St. John’s final score: Irish come up just short
The Red Storm held off a late charge from Notre Dame to pull off the upset.

The Red Storm controlled the game for most of the second half, but the Irish made a late charge behind Eric Atkins, who finished with 21 points, four assists and six steals.
Atkins hit a tough contested shot to give Notre Dame a 63-61 lead with less than three minutes left. D’Angelo Harrison, St. John’s leading scorer, responded with a huge three-pointer that allowed the Red Storm to regain the momentum.
From there, St. John’s half-court defense was the difference, as they made two huge blocks in the final minute to seal the game. It wasn’t the prettiest game for Steve Lavin’s team, who shot 42 percent from the field and only 18 percent from three, but after starting Big East play at 1-3, they will take it.
The Irish, who have now dropped two consecutive conference games, will likely slip out of the Top 25 next week.
