Syracuse investigated by NCAA for academic fraud, per report

Syracuse forward James Southerland’s suspension is reportedly the result of an NCAA investigation into the basketball program’s academic records.

James Southerland’s recent suspension is reportedly the result of an NCAA investigation into the academic records of the Syracuse basketball team. The investigation allegedly centers around a term paper and the possibility that a portion of it was written by a tutor.

Southerland has actually been suspended twice. The first suspension was quickly cleared up after Southerland reportedly made a payment to reimburse for an improper benefit that he had received. Southerland was reinstated and played against Providence before he was suspended again two days later prior to the team’s game against Villanova. Southerland sat on the team’s bench against the Wildcats, but was not in uniform.

Southerland is averaging 13.6 points and 5.2 rebounds per game this season. If the matter is not resolved, he will not be allowed to travel with the team to Louisville on Friday.

Syracuse is no stranger to suspensions after losing Fab Melo just days before the start of the NCAA Tournament last season.
