Thad Matta receives extension with Ohio State through 2019

Thad Matta will coach Ohio State for at least six more seasons, as his contract has been extended - with a pay raise - through 2019.

Thad Matta and Ohio State have reached terms on an extension that will boost the head basketball coach’s pay and keep him in charge of the Buckeyes until 2019.

Rusty Miller of the Associated Press tweeted out the details of the contract, which bumps Matta’s salary to over $3.2 million and has clauses regarding the academic standing of the team and how Matta must handle potential NCAA violations - a major concern for the school after sanctions caused the football team to miss a likely shot at a national championship after sanctions based on violations committed by Jim Tressel.

Matta, now 45, has done a pretty good job as head coach in Columbus, to say the least. They’ve won no national titles, but have been a contender year-in, year-out, winning the Big Ten’s regular season five times in eight years and the conference’s tournament three of those years. They were a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament two years ago and made the Final Four for the first time. His record is 221-65 at Ohio State, and at No. 15 in the latest AP poll, they’re certainly one of the better teams in the country again.

Matta had previously been in charge at Xavier and Butler, and has a lifetime record of 323-96.
