Texas forward Jonathan Holmes out indefinitely with broken hand

The hits keep coming for Texas, which will now be without forward Jonathan Holmes.

USA TODAY Sports

An ugly season for the Texas men's basketball team got worse on Monday, when forward Jonathan Holmes injured his right hand against Oklahoma. Texas announced shortly thereafter that Holmes had a broken bone in the hand, and he's now been ruled out indefinitely. They did, however, characterize the injury as not season-ending.

Holmes is the leading rebounder for Rick Barnes’ club, pulling down 7.1 boards per game. He’s been a consistent presence in the paint for the Longhorns, also averaging 7.7 points a game. He had scored in double figures in each of his last three games before going down early in Norman on Monday night. The injury occurred as he went for an offensive rebound off a free throw, tipping it in the air to himself multiple times. The blow that caused the injury wasn’t exactly clear.

Texas is already playing without guard Myck Kabongo, who's been suspended for violating NCAA rules. Kabongo was originally suspended for the full season, before the NCAA reduced it to 23 games. But much of the damage has already been done, as the Longhorns are 8-10 overall and 0-5 in the conference. Losing Holmes will certainly not aid things.
