No. 12 Minnesota vs. Northwestern final score: Gophers drop third straight, 55-48

College basketball fans have been treated to a flurry of upsets Wednesday night, and it is no different in Evanston, Ill., where Northwestern topped No. 12 Minnesota, 55-48.

The Northwestern Wildcats were the latest team to join Wednesday night's college basketball upset party. They beat the No. 12 Minnesota Golden Gophers, 55-48, at home behind 16 points from Jared Swopshire.

With the loss, Minnesota has now dropped three straight and is 3-3 in Big Ten play. Northwestern improves to 3-4 in the conference and has now beaten a ranked opponent for the second time in its last three games.

Though Swopshire’s 16 was a game high, the former Louisville Cardinal also grabbed eight rebounds and had two steals.

Trevor Mbakwe had 14 points to lead Minnesota, but the Gophers managed just seven points off their bench, all from Julian Welch. His points came on 3-of-11 shooting.

The Wildcats won despite a huge disadvantage on the glass. Mbakwe had 16 rebounds to help the Gophers to a 42-23 rebounding margin.

Northwestern was the fourth team to topple a ranked opponent Wednesday night. Earlier, Miami knocked off No. 1 Duke, La Salle got a last-second layup to sneak by No. 9 Butler and Drake outlasted No. 17 Creighton.
