No. 15 New Mexico vs. San Diego State final score: Aztecs make statement with 55-34 win

After falling out of the top 25, San Diego State dominated New Mexico at home Saturday afternoon, holding them to just 34 points on 11-44 shooting.

USA TODAY Sports

After falling out of the top 25, the San Diego State Aztecs used Saturday’s home game against No. 15 New Mexico to make a statement. The Aztecs never trailed in their 55-34 win over the Lobos to earn their first victory over a ranked opponent all year.

New Mexico’s previous season low in points was 46 in a loss to St. Louis on New Year’s Eve.

Though neither team was scintillating from the field, the Aztecs outplayed New Mexico across the board and limited the Lobos’ chances offensively. San Diego State held a 37-23 advantage on the glass, forced the Lobos into 17 turnovers -- 10 on steals-- and held New Mexico to just 25-percent shooting.

Forward JJ O'Brien led San Diego State with 12 points and controlled the boards with a game-high 10 rebounds. Kendall Williams had 14 points for New Mexico in the losing effort, but also turned it over five times.

The loss snaps a four-game winning streak for New Mexico, who will look to get back on track at Wyoming on Jan. 30. San Diego State plays again Feb. 2 at Air Force.
