Kentucky, North Carolina agree to renew series

After a one-year break, North Carolina and Kentucky have reportedly agreed to a home-and-home series starting next season.

North Carolina and Kentucky, two of the historic blue blood college basketball programs, have renewed their series and will play each other again starting next year. John Clay of BlogInKy writes that the renewal calls for a two-year home-and-home series, beginning in Chapel Hill next season.

The traditional series between the two powerhouses took a break this year, but John Calipari indicated last spring that the schools were working towards a new deal. With the multiple conference realignment moves, some of the historic cross-conference rivalry games have fallen off the schedule. Kentucky is no longer scheduled to play Indiana, and the Carolina series was still up in the air.

The game often features two of the most talented rosters in college hoops, loaded with future NBA players on both sides. The typically early-season game is also often an unofficial start to the season, providing a national spotlight for college basketball as the football season winds down.

Calipari’s Wildcats have won three of the last four meetings, but both schools have their usual haul of recruits coming in next year for what will be a non-conference marquee game in Chapel Hill.
