No. 14 Butler rally past St. Joseph’s for a 72-66 win

Butler was victorious in its first game ever as a member of the Atlantic 10.

Howard Smith-USA TODAY Sports

In its Atlantic 10 debut, Butler was tested but showed it belonged by coming from behind to defeat St. Joseph’s, 72-66.

Butler got a quick test of how tough the conference can be, as it trailed St. Joseph’s, 40-35, at the half. But the Bulldogs locked down defensively on the Hawks and held them to just 26 second-half points. St. Joseph’s did not score over the final 2:56 of the game.

Leading the way for Butler was the tandem of Rotnei Clarke and Andrew Smith, who finished with 28 points and 24 points.

Clarke gave Butler the lead for good on a three-pointer with 7:42 remaining that pushed his team ahead, 57-56. He hit six three-pointers in the win.

The victory extends Butler’s win streak to 10 straight games.

The Bulldogs will stay on the road to play Dayton on Saturday, while the Hawks travel across the state to play Duquesne that same day.
